Vermont License Plates

Vermont issued its first license plate in 1905 and the undated issue years of license plates were: 1905 – 1908, 1916 – 1918, 1969 and 1977. The first Vermont license plates were made of porcelain and included the following years: 1905 through 1915, when license plates were embossed steel and later embossed aluminum. The first Vermont license plate was small, less than 12 inches wide. Later, the Vermont license plates were 14 or 15 inches wide. The first license plate issued in Vermont was screened with: "VERMONT AUTOMOBILE REGISTER" across the top of license plate.

From 1948 through 1950, Vermont license plates were embossed with the slogan "GREEN MOUNTAINS" on top. In 1957, the word "SEE" was embossed at the bottom of license plate to read "SEE VERMONT". The "SEE VERMONT" slogan continued until 1966. This slogan was dropped in 1967 and 1968 but returned again in 1969 where it remained through 1976. In 1977, the slogan "GREEN MOUNTAINS" was once again used on Vermont license plates until 1990. In 1993, the slogan "GREEN MOUNTAIN STATE" was screened on the bottom of the Vermont plate. Vermont adopted reflective white on reflective green sheeting for its license plates in 1967.

I received the 1947 OREGON STATE LICENSE PLATE--EMBOSSED WITH MY CUSTOM NUMBER BY PRIORITY MAIL ON THURSDAY, MARCH 25th, I am impressed beyond words, looking atthe plate is like being transported back in time to see my late father's 1947 Black Buick RoadMaster, White topped Convertible that had the 380-497 plate, the car was stolen in Portland, and wound up on blocks in a field in Texas, it was beyond recovery, never saw it after that.As I e-mailed earlier, I will be ordering 2 more plates, possibly on Friday March 26th or Monday March 29th. My son will be helping with the ordering, he is more familiar with theprocess of using the computer.

Richard - Lawrenceville, Georgia
