Ohio License Plates History

Ohio began issuing license plates in 1908, however the city of Cleveland issued its first license plate in 1901 (Cleveland was on par with Detroit in the early 1900’s auto manufacturing). From 1908 to 1911, the license plates were made of porcelain in Columbus. Cincinnati’s license plates were made of brass. Metal replaced porcelain in 1912 and the license plate numbers were painted on until 1917. Embossed license plates were introduced in 1918 and plates were issued in pairs, except during the World War II era from 1939 to 1945 when due to the shortage of metal only single license plates were issued.

Starting in 1935, a county coding scheme involving the letters in the plate's serial number was introduced. This scheme was used throughout the state until the 1970's, when the system broke down in the most populous counties because of the number of vehicles registered. The coding scheme was abandoned with the issuance of the 1982 plates. Today, there is a county coding scheme on a sticker that displays the county number based on its placement in alphabetical order.

In 1938, the first slogan appeared on Ohio’s license plates "150 ANNIV. N.W. TERRITORY". An embossed image of a conestoga wagon used by westward bound settlers was alsoused on this commemorative license plate. The next commemorative license plate was issued in 1953 to mark 150 years of statehood for Ohio. From 1973 through 1975, Ohio's embossed slogan was "SEAT BELTS FASTENED?" along the top of the plate. The next symbol on Ohio license plates was the solid map of the state introduced in 1980, separating letters from numbers.

Ohio introduced retro-reflective foil from 3M on license plates in 1974 and has continued its use ever since. As a state which had a pioneering auto manufacturing business in the early 1900’s, Ohioans are dedicated car collectors. Famous Ohio car manufacturers include Packard, Studebaker and Willys, and with this automotive history, Ohioans continue to restore and preserve American classics – even cars and trucks made in Detroit, Michigan.

I Love the front Euro plate I ordered for my Volvo. Every one says it looks so much better. Got the plate a week after it shipped out. Have recommended to every one that has asked where to get one

Jason - Columbus, Ohio

I got your plates today. Wow, they are fantastic! They look very professionally done and the color matches perfectly. I couldn't ask for any better. It was done exactly as I had drawn it up. Hats off to you.If you twisted my arm and forced me to say anything less than "perfection" I'd say I wouldn't mind if the metal were twice () as thick. It does seem a bit thinner than what I had expected. These custom plates rock! Thanks a bunch. :)Jason

Cindy F - Hanover, PA

Tom - Kalamazoo. Michigan

After the purchase of my Alpina, I noticed that the car was different from all her BMW E38 siblings in North America by having the European trunk lid on it, preventing me from using a US format license plate.I decided, upon reviewing Licenseplates.tv's reputation to use their product on my car and it is absolutely gorgeous. Very clear print on the blue bar, great reflective pain and nicely done lettering.I am definitely most satisfied with my purchase and recommend Licenseplates.tv to anyone wanting a authentically reproduced quality product!

I just got my 4th plate from you today and I continue to be amazed by the quality of the product. Right down to the proper size and no-hole orientation of the 55 NY plate (I only learned that by going back and visiting the site). Thanks so much. You've helped to make several old cars of mine, my brother's and my best friend even more period-authentic. Great product and well worth the expense for something done with such a high level of quality! I guess that might be silly, since the originals were made by state prisoners ... but that's another story!!!

Lanny - Fairview, Oregon

I received the 1947 OREGON STATE LICENSE PLATE--EMBOSSED WITH MY CUSTOM NUMBER BY PRIORITY MAIL ON THURSDAY, MARCH 25th, I am impressed beyond words, looking atthe plate is like being transported back in time to see my late father's 1947 Black Buick RoadMaster, White topped Convertible that had the 380-497 plate, the car was stolen in Portland, and wound up on blocks in a field in Texas, it was beyond recovery, never saw it after that.As I e-mailed earlier, I will be ordering 2 more plates, possibly on Friday March 26th or Monday March 29th. My son will be helping with the ordering, he is more familiar with theprocess of using the computer.
