Massachusetts License Plates

Massachusetts has the honor of being the first state in the union to issue license plates in 1903. The first example hadMASS AUTOMOBILE REGISTER on top of the license plate. Beginning in 1903 through 1915, Massachusetts license plates were made of porcelain and numbers were painted on. There is no written record of early Massachusetts license plates.

The first graphic to appear on license plates fromMassachusetts was an embossed codfish on the bottom of the 1928 issue. This was in honor of commercial fishing in the state and to promote the fishing industry. Massachusetts fishermen were horrified to see the codfish on the 1928 license plate swimming away from the word MASS and many superstitious fishermen viewed this as bad luck. This error was corrected on the 1929 Massachusetts commercial license plate where the codfish actually swam toward MASS.There was another symbol embossed/stamped on the bottom of 1926, 1930 and 1933 Massachusetts license plates – a horizontal line through a circle, which some may interpret as a rising sun or the planet Saturn.

Massachusetts was one of the wealthiest states in the union in the early days of the automobile and many collectors of fine automobiles hail from the state. Like Iowa, Washington and Maryland, Massachusetts license plates were utilitarian and simple, but because of history, extremely popular with car collectors. Today, one of the most popular license plates in the state is the translucent green on retro-reflective white license plate first issued in 1977. Massachusetts issued its first retro-reflective license plate in 1967 –blue on retro-reflective white.

ATTN: Customer ServiceTo whom it may concern,I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and your company for producing a fine product. I have ordered about 8 plates from you over the past 10 years and have been delighted by every one of them.I recently ran into a miss communication with the printing of my latest plate. It was a gift for a friend of mine. I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to have the plate redone at a nominal fee. I understand the price of raw materials, shipping and handling and the other items that go with that. But all in all the recipient loved what was given to him thus eliminating the need to redo that plate. Thanks again. In the meantime I will get together additional information for new plates over the next couple of weeks. Again thank you for your assistance and your continued production of a quality product.Sincerely Yours,Lester

I just got my 4th plate from you today and I continue to be amazed by the quality of the product. Right down to the proper size and no-hole orientation of the 55 NY plate (I only learned that by going back and visiting the site). Thanks so much. You've helped to make several old cars of mine, my brother's and my best friend even more period-authentic. Great product and well worth the expense for something done with such a high level of quality! I guess that might be silly, since the originals were made by state prisoners ... but that's another story!!!

The plate got here today and looks great.Steve

I received the 1947 OREGON STATE LICENSE PLATE--EMBOSSED WITH MY CUSTOM NUMBER BY PRIORITY MAIL ON THURSDAY, MARCH 25th, I am impressed beyond words, looking atthe plate is like being transported back in time to see my late father's 1947 Black Buick RoadMaster, White topped Convertible that had the 380-497 plate, the car was stolen in Portland, and wound up on blocks in a field in Texas, it was beyond recovery, never saw it after that.As I e-mailed earlier, I will be ordering 2 more plates, possibly on Friday March 26th or Monday March 29th. My son will be helping with the ordering, he is more familiar with theprocess of using the computer.
