Maryland License Plates

Maryland registered 9,000 vehicles from 1904 to 1910 when the state first started to issue license plates. In 1910, Maryland license plates were manufactured in a thin metal which was crudely embossed by hammering over wooden dies. From 1911 through 1914, license plates of Maryland were made of porcelain. Steel replaced porcelain in 1915. The first slogan to appear on Maryland’s license plates was TERCENTENARY to celebrate three hundred years of statehood in 1934. The state name Maryland or MD and the year was always embossed on license plates. The slogan DRIVE CAREFULLY appeared on all Maryland license plates starting in 1942 and ended in 1947.

Maryland embossed an expiration date on its license plates beginning in 1936 through 1947 and the expiration date was always: 3-31-year (2 digits of year). The expiration date reappeared in 1957 and ended in 1970 (03-31-70).

Maryland did not introduce retro-reflective 3M foil over an aluminum substrate until 1986 and this continues today to meet the US Department of Transportation (DOT) mandates. The first license plate with graphics was issued in 1976 to commemorate the nations Bi-centennial celebrations. Maryland’s first wide scale license plate with graphics was issued in 1993 and this issue is valid today.

In 1910, Maryland had no reciprocity laws with other states and because of its closeness to Washington, D.C. and Virginia, many vehicles were seen with three license plates (Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Virginia). Maryland agreed in 1923 to enact reciprocity laws with these states. Maryland’s license plates were made by the state’s prison system, expect for 2005, due to violence. The state of New Jersey prison system manufactured Maryland’s license plates.

Maryland has a large car collector population and many “old car shows where collectors gather and show off their classic vehicles from January to December. Collectors have used our replica metal license plates for showing their vehicles and have won many Best in Class or Best of Show trophies.

Just wanted to say thanks for the great products and service! You all made a custom military style plate for my military jeep and a vintage '71 plate for my CJ5. The plates are great and look fantastic on my vehicles. Thanks again.

I had seen this website about 6 months ago prior to purchasing my 2009 VW Jetta. When I finally bought the car I slowly started modifying it: 15" Kicker sub in a ported box, HID lights, smoked taillights, clear sidemarkers, and even a 2" shorty antenna. After debating with myself whether to make the purchase or not I finally gave in and ordered my German license plate with the Universal Holder. About a business week later the plates arrived and I was nervous & anxious to see how they had turned out...the product AMAZING! I still can't believe I only paid $36 for these plates that could easily have been sold for $150. The quality is top-notch and installation took about 5 minutes total. THANK YOU FOR HAVING SUCH GREAT PRODUCTS. I will definitely be recommending you guys.

I received the 1947 OREGON STATE LICENSE PLATE--EMBOSSED WITH MY CUSTOM NUMBER BY PRIORITY MAIL ON THURSDAY, MARCH 25th, I am impressed beyond words, looking atthe plate is like being transported back in time to see my late father's 1947 Black Buick RoadMaster, White topped Convertible that had the 380-497 plate, the car was stolen in Portland, and wound up on blocks in a field in Texas, it was beyond recovery, never saw it after that.As I e-mailed earlier, I will be ordering 2 more plates, possibly on Friday March 26th or Monday March 29th. My son will be helping with the ordering, he is more familiar with theprocess of using the computer.

After the purchase of my Alpina, I noticed that the car was different from all her BMW E38 siblings in North America by having the European trunk lid on it, preventing me from using a US format license plate.I decided, upon reviewing Licenseplates.tv's reputation to use their product on my car and it is absolutely gorgeous. Very clear print on the blue bar, great reflective pain and nicely done lettering.I am definitely most satisfied with my purchase and recommend Licenseplates.tv to anyone wanting a authentically reproduced quality product!
