Alaska License Plates

License plates were first issued to all motor vehicles in 1921 in Alaska Territory. Prior to 1921, the Territory of Alaska issued license plates to for-hire vehicles only. Alaska became a State in 1959 so all license plates issued prior to 1959 were issued by the Territory of Alaska.

The first slogan appeared on Alaska’s license plates in 1966 "1867 NORTH TO THE FUTURE 1967" embossed on the bottom. This slogan was used without the year (1867 & 1967) from 1970 through 1975. In 1968, Alaska introduced this slogan on its license plates "THE LAST FRONTIER". This slogan was used until 2007 but the license plate is still used. Alaska introduced the first graphic on its license plates in 1948 48 and was used until 1975 –except for the years 1966 and 1967 where a totem pole replaced the flag. The flag and totem poles were embossed on the license plate. In 1977, Alaska issued a license plate with printed graphics of a Kodiak bear, a mountain range and ALASKA on retro-reflective white.

Original Alaska Territory license plates are among the rarest in the world because so few were issued. Alaska is still a low-density populated state and the amount of motor vehicles are lowest in the union. In the days of Alaska as a territory, cities including Fairbanks, Anchorage, Juneau, Wrangell, Haines and Ketchikan issued front license plates in approximate size: 4 x 7. During the years of the second world war, Alaska’s license plates were made of fiberboard (1945 through 1947). These plates are rare and only a few may exist.

I received the JIG 59 plate on Sat. the 16th. Licenseplates.TV came through again as usual, I'm really pleased with the results. My grandpa's name was Louis, his nickname was Jig, due to the little "jig" dance that he would do. My 3rd son was able to find and buy back Jig's 1959 Pontiac Catalina 4dr Sedan, for which the plate will be added to the other things related to the car. Thanks again,Lanny

I just got my 4th plate from you today and I continue to be amazed by the quality of the product. Right down to the proper size and no-hole orientation of the 55 NY plate (I only learned that by going back and visiting the site). Thanks so much. You've helped to make several old cars of mine, my brother's and my best friend even more period-authentic. Great product and well worth the expense for something done with such a high level of quality! I guess that might be silly, since the originals were made by state prisoners ... but that's another story!!!

I wanted everyone to know what a wonderful experience I had ordering from your company. The quality and workmanship you put into this tag is impeccable. I am tickled pink how good it looks on the front of my 2009 Mini Cooper Clubman S.I had a lot of questions about the tag from people at the car show yesterday. In case anyone wonders about the name "MAURICE BG", this is in honor of Maurice Gibbs, from the Bee Gees, who passed away a few years ago. The color of my car is British Green hence the BG so it wasnatural to name it after Maurice. Thanks again. I will be ordering another tag soon for my husband's classic Lincoln.
