North Dakota License Plates

The first license plates from North Dakota were issued by cities within the state beginning in 1905. The state of North Dakota issued its first license plate in 1911, a flat steel plate with embossed edges for strength. North Dakota, unlike many other states, did not issue any porcelain license plates. In 1956 the slogan PEACE GARDEN STATE was embossed on the bottom of North Dakota license plates, referring to the 2,300 acre park in the state which straddles the Canadian border. Being a pioneer state, North Dakota introduced retro-reflective white license plates in 1958.

In 1984, a license plate to commemorate Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders was issued.  The license plate showed Teddy Roosevelt, a drape of Old Glory, and his Rough Riders. This North Dakota license plate is rare, most are in the hands of collectors. In 1987, North Dakota issued a license plate with graphic base CENTENNIAL along the top of the plate, as well as black, light blue, and orange-yellow graphics to celebrate 100 years of statehood including 1889 on lower left corner, and 1989 on lower right corner.

Today, North Dakota still issues its license plates with the PEACE GARDEN STATE slogan, but the state has added DISCOVER THE SPIRIT to the screened background in addition to images of a bison and wheat.
